ExoVasc® External Aortic Root Support

The condition: aortic dilation and dissection

One of the features of Marfan syndrome is aortic dilation or dilatation. People affected by this are at risk of aortic dissection.

The conventional approach: Bentall’s procedure

The traditional preventative treatment for this condition is a Bentall graft, a major surgical procedure. During surgery, the ascending aorta and aortic valve are removed and replaced by an artificial graft. To prevent blood clots forming on the graft, the patient has to take anticoagulant drugs for the rest of his or her life.

The new approach: the ExoVasc^® External Root Support

The ExoVasc^® External Aortic Root Support aims to provide an alternative to Bentall’s procedure. A bespoke external support is created which exactly matches the patient’s aorta. This is wrapped around the ascending aorta, which remains intact. Since the vessel remains intact, there is no need for the patient to take anticoagulant drugs.
